Perception of English Monophthongs by Native Speakers of Mandarin

چکیده
This study explores the perception of English monophthongs by native speakers of Mandarin (hereafter NSMs). The data were collected at the phonetics laboratory at Jiangsu University of Science and Technology (hereafter JUST), China. The results reveal that the overall percentage of correct vowel perception is 81.2%, that the phonetic contexts affect the subjects’ vowel perception, and that the best perceived monophthongs are /uː/, /ɑː/, /iː/ and /ɪ/, while the worst perceived ones are /æ, /ʌ/ and /ɒ/. These findings have implications for the teaching of EFL phonetics to NSMs in China.

Perception and production of English cues to plosive voicing by native Mandarin speakers
Perception and production of English cues to plosive voicing by native Mandarin speakers" (2013). Undergraduate Honors Theses. Paper 429. Abstract The acquisition of non-native sounds is a prominent feature of second language acquisition. Mandarin does not permit the voiced plosives /b d g/ or plosives in the syllable coda position, both features of many English words. This disparity presents a...
متن کاملAcoustic characteristics of English lexical stress produced by native Mandarin speakers.
Native speakers of Mandarin Chinese have difficulty producing native-like English stress contrasts. Acoustically, English lexical stress is multidimensional, involving manipulation of fundamental frequency (F0), duration, intensity and vowel quality. Errors in any or all of these correlates could interfere with perception of the stress contrast, but it is unknown which correlates are most probl...
متن کاملThe weighting of vowel quality in native and non-native listeners' perception of English lexical stress
Although vowel quality is an important cue to the perception of English lexical stress, few studies have examined the role this cue plays for non-native speakers. Previous research found that Mandarin speakers had problems using vowel reduction as a cue in English lexical stress production. Assuming native-like perception is a prerequisite to native-like production for non-native speech, this s...

This study investigates perception by Mandarin Chinese and Japanese native speakers of English consonants in syllable-final position, and the effect of vowel duration as a cue to voicing in syllablefinal stops. Two experiments were conducted in the study and the results revealed that Mandarin Chinese speakers performed better than Japanese speakers but the position of the consonant in the sylla...

This study investigates pitch interplay in non-native (L2) speech. Specifically, experiments were conducted to examine how native English speakers perceive and produce Mandarin statements and unmarked questions. Results from the perceptual experiment showed English listeners did not resolve the simultaneous pitch cues from intonation and tone the same way as native Mandarin speakers. They had l...
